Jeollanam-do consists of a beautiful archipelago with high mountains, wide plains and clean waters among which very kind people live happily together. This area belonged to Mahan in 3-Han era and to Gujiha castle, the southern one of 5 Bangs under Baegjae dynasty, centered on Mujinju. In the united Silla dynasty having 9 Jus and 5 small capitals as its local administration system, this area belonged to Mujinju, which was renamed as Muju in 16th year of King Gyeongdeog(AD 757). This local center administrated 1 guns and 43 hyeons. In the Korea dynasty, King Seongjong ruled his kingdom with 12 Mogs in his 2nd year(AD 983) and this area was called as Naju and Seungju-mog. In his 14th year(AD 995), the country was divided administratively into 10 Dos and the area was called Haeyang(marine)-do. In the 9th year of King Hyeonjong(AD 1018), Haeyand-do and Gannam-do(Jeonbuk) were merged into Jeolla-do In Choseon dynasty, the country was divided administratively into 8 Dos and the area was called as Gwangnam-do, Jeongwang-do or Jeonnam-do but the name of Jeolla-do remained. On May 26th 1895, the 32nd year of Gojong, the administration system changed to 23 Bus and Jeolla-do was divided into Jeonju-bu, Namwon-bu, Naju-bu and Jeju-bu. The current 7 cities and guns including Suncheon and Damyang belonged to Namwon-bu, Yeonggwang and Jangseong belonged to Jeonju-bu and other 16 cities and guns belonged to Naju-bu.On August 4th 1896, the 33rd year of Gojong, the royal order No 36 repealed the 23 Bu system and the 8 Do system was resurrected to the 13 Do system with 5 Dos including Jeolla, Chungcheong, Gyeongsang divided into south and north ones. Jeolla was divided into south and north ones and the southern part was called as Jeollanam-do(1mog, 32 guns) until now.

August 1896

  • Jeollanam-do was divided into south and north one and Jeollanam-do was established with Gwangju-gu as the provincial office.

August 1946

  • Jeju was separated from Jeollanam-do and elevated to a ‘do’.

July 1981

  • Geumseong City was established, merging Naju-eup Naju-gun and Yeongsanpo-eup.

January 1986

  • Yeocheon substation was renamed as Yeocheon City and Geumseong City as Naju City.

November 1986

  • Songjeong-eup Gwangsan-gun was elevated to Songjeong City.
  • Gwangju City was elevated to Gwangju Direct Controlled City, separated from Jeollanam-do.

January 1988

  • Songjeong City and Gwangsan-gun were incorporated into Gwangju Direct Controlled City.

January 1989

  • Gwangyang substation was elevated into East Gwangyang City.

January 1995

  • Suncheon City and Seungju-gun were merged into Suncheon City.
  • Naju City and Naju-gun were merged into Naju City.
  • East Gwangyang City and Gwangyang-gun were merged into Gwangyang City.

April 1998

  • Yeosu City, Yeocheon City and Yeocheon-gun were merged into Yeosu City.

November 2005

  • The provincial office was relocated to 1000 Namag-ri Samhyang-myeon Muan-gun Jeollanam-do.

2009~

  • Jeollanam-do consists of 5 cities, 17 guns, 31 eups, 198 myeon, 66 dongs and 52 substation.
