The Great Festival of Myeongnyang
This festival takes place to commemorate the victory of Admiral Lee Sun-shin who sank or drove away 133 attacking Japanese warships with only 13 warships during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1597.
This year the festival takes place from the 8th to the 11th of October at the Jindo Great Bridge (Korea’s “Golden Gate” suspension bridge) and the surrounding area. During the festival, various events including a re-enactment of the Myeongnyang Great Victory take place. Tourists can learn the history that inspired the festival and have a memorable experience.
Namdo Food Festival
As the largest food festival in Korea, tourists can’t help but feel the genuine kindness of the local people while enjoying tasty foods. This festival takes place at the folk village in Nagan-eupseong Folk Village of Suncheon for 4 days from the 8th to the 11th of October. Tourists can try a variety of foods such as “3-combination of Makgoli, pork and old Kimchi, called ”Hongtag and mustard leaf Kimchi from Dolsan.
Gangjin Porcelain Celadon Cultural Festival
Selected as the best festival for 8 consecutive years since 2002, the celadon festival takes place in Gangjin-gun for 9 days from the 8th to the 16th during August. Tourists can experience crafting their very own celadon in kiln sites where 188 celadon kilns are located.
Hampyeong Butterfly Festival
As a major Korean nature and eco tour festival, the Butterfly Festival takes place at the Butterfly Expo Park in Hampyeong for 17 days from the 24th April to the 10th of May with the theme of “Butterfly = Hope.” Tourists can visit environment-friendly agriculture exhibitions, learn about the stages of life of butterflies and other insects. They can also roast barley peas, watch traditional livestock chasing and catching of roaches, while enjoying the harmony of nature created by butterflies, flowers and insects.
Boseong Green Tea Festival
Green tea production in this area accounts for 40% of all nationwide production, so it is natural that there is a festival for green tea. This festival takes place at tea plantations across Boseong for 4 days from the 8th to the 11th in May. Tourists can experience the beauty and natural fragrance of green tea by walking around the tea farms and experience picking and curing their own tea leaves. They can also shop for a variety of unique green tea products such as green tea cakes and even cosmetics. The Boseong Green Tea Festival is the ultimate green tea festival.
Damyang Bamboo Festival
With the theme of “Sweet-Smelling Damyang Nature As It Always Is,” this festival takes place all across the area of Jungnogwon and Gwanbangjerim for 6 days from the 2nd to the 7th of May. The bamboo festival gives tourists the opportunity to experience living with bamboo. The festival offers a unique opportunity to float along a river on a bamboo raft, experience fishing with bamboo poles and engage in “bamboo water pistol” combat – a favorite among children.
Yeongam Wang In Culture Festival
To heighten the achievement of Dr. Wang In who, 1,600 years ago, delivered advanced culture to Japan to help them develop the brilliant Asca culture, this festival is held by Korean and Japanese descendants at the archeological sites of Wang In from the 4th to the 7th of April along with the best, 40km long cherry blossom street.
Gurye Cornelian Cherry Festival
Rising in Mt. Jirisan, the Cornelian Cherry is a hub tree that is the first to inform us that spring is coming. This festival takes place for 4 days at tourist resorts around the Jirisan spa from the 19th to the 22nd of March. At this festival one can witness the harmonious coexistence of modern and tradition. The festival established itself as a major flower festival in Korea.
